Thursday 10-1-09 Force mass and inertia

    Today in physics we learned Newtons First Law, which can be found in Ch. 2 on page 22.

    force(F)=any push or pull on an object. If your going to apply force on something, you have to touch it.
    -force causes motion (acceleration)
    -force can stop motion (acceleration)
    -constant velocity (zero acceleration) a=om/s2
    you have to have a force in order to have acceleration.
    reminder acceleration is a change in velocity

    Gravitational force is pulling you down while another force is holding you up. The force that is pulling you down and holding you up must be balanced
    balanced(no net forces) F=o
    net force is all the forces on an object added together.
    If force is equal to zero then you are at a constant velocity.
    If the forces are not balanced then there will be acceleration, if the forces are balanced then there is no acceleration.

    Units:
    newton's (N)
    pounds (lb)

    Mass (m): amount of matter or stuff in an object.
    Bigger objects usually have more mass.
    Smaller objects usually have less mass.

    Units:
    Kilograms (kg)
    grams (g)

    Inertia-the resistance to change in motion
    depends on mass; the more mass, the more inertia
    ex: If you run into a car whose going to be easier to move? You, because the car has more inertia
    100kg=1xInertia
    if you have 200kg it =2xInertia
    600kg=6x the Inertia

    -an object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
    -Law was originally introduced by Galileo, also known as the law of inertia.
    -No force is needed to maintain motion. Instead it is needed to stop motion.

    newtons 1st law- a body at rest will remain at rest, unless acted on by a net force.

    No force is needed to maintain the motion, but it is needed to stop the motion.
    It talks about inertia and types of forces like friction.
    It can also called the the law of inertia.

  6. Define Newtons first law

    Is when a object is left alone it maintains a constant velocity. Know the object is not pushed or pulled upon, its velocity will naturally remain constant. so what that means is that once moving at a steady speed in a straight line it will continue to move at a steady speed and straight line.so the object is standing still with no contact by any force.

    In this slideshow, I learned that newtons 1st law is known as "law of inertia". Every object is always at rest, unless it is added external force. Objects are always in motion until an external force is added.

  12. Newton was a physicist in the 17th century.He discovered gravity when apple fell in his head. Newton's first law of motion: when a object in a state of uniform motion remains the same state of motion unless an external force is applied to it. Galileo originally introduced this law. It is also known as the law of inertia. Force is needed to start acceleration. It is also needed to stop motion. Forces also include friction. Newton's second law of motion is when the relationship between an object's mass m, its acceleration a, and the applied force F is F= m times a. Newton's third law of motion says that for every action, there is an equal and opposing reaction. Newton's law of gravity states that every object in the universe exerts gravitational force on every other object in the universe. The grater the mass the bigger the gravitational force.
    This website gives many examples for Newton's laws. For example, for Newton's law of gravity it gives you an example of a cannon being fired from a raised ground.

  13. From my sources (http://science.discovery.com/interactives/literacy/newton/media/newtonfinal415.swf) I found that an object at rest will never move unless an external source pushes on it, and an object in motion will never stop unless another force stops it.

    The fine example given on the site was a apple and a worm with zero motion until you click it and a hand pushes it and thus puts it in motion and only the force of a wall stops the worm from moving any more.

    Newton first states: that if an object is not moving it tends to stay in the same position unless something is acted upon it. The same will be said if the object will be in motion. This is law can also be know as the law of inertia. Force is not needed to maintain an object in motion it is only needed in the beginning, but is needed when to stop the object.

    The website had used a picture to demonstrate how force was applied and how it wouldn't stop unless something was acted upon it It had also talked about all the other laws, and had given a picture for each of the laws they had talked about. It had used sorta of a slide show type format to organized the website.

    on the website i went to they talked about who was newton, they showed a picture, and they also talked about his other laws: Newton's second law, Newton's third law and Newton's law of gravity.

    For example in this website they used a block to illustrate how uniform motion works or in other words how it works with out friction.

    Newton's first law
    This law states that every object stays in a state of rest or constant motion unless forces is impied on it causing it to change it state.

    In this website I learned about Newton's first law through a demonstration of a ball that was motionless. This ball was then pushed and it began rolling. The way the law was represented is that the ball that was in constant motion or a state of rest was no longer in that state because a force (the hand that pushed it) was applied to the ball that caused it to move.
    This law can also be know as the law of inertia.

  26. The website i went to tell us a little bit about isaac newton and who his law was first introduced by and then it shows a picture describing Newtons first law. Newton was a revolutionary classical physicist in the 17th century. His law was first introduced by Galileo then mastered by his. Newtons law states that every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.

    ALSO IN THE WEBSITE IT TALKS ABOUT NEWTONS SECOND LAW IT SAYS THAT THE ACCELERATION OF AN OBJECT DEPENDS ON THE MASS OF THE OBJECT AND THE AMOUNT OF FORCE APPLIED. A BALL WITH GREATER MASS REQUIRES MORE FORCE THAN A BALL WITH LESS MASS TO ACHIVE THE SAME ACCELERATION.
